Meet Peaches: Our Gentle Giant with a Surprising DNA Story
When we first brought home “Higgins” from the Geauga County Dog Warden, we had no idea this beautiful boy would become such an integral part of our family, or that his name would evolve as wonderfully as he has.
Higgins quickly became Hoagie, which naturally transformed into Peaches. Now he answers to all of them: Hogie, Peaches, Peachy, Peachyboo. Honestly, he’s just happy someone’s talking to him.
A Gentle Soul with Unique Preferences
Peaches is hands down the most gentle dog we’ve ever had. There’s something special about rescue dogs, and he embodies that grateful, loving spirit completely.
Here’s something unusual we’ve noticed: he gravitates toward the boys and men in his life. Most dogs tend to prefer women, but not our Peachyboo. He’s an equal opportunity lover, but he definitely has a soft spot for the guys. We joke that he just knows a good buddy when he sees one.
The DNA Surprise
When we adopted him, we were convinced he had collie in him. Those features, that gentle demeanor, it all seemed to fit. So we sent off for DNA testing, curious to confirm our theory.
The results? Not a trace of collie! Our “100% Hogie” turned out to be:
- 32.1% German Shepherd Dog
- 21.7% Alaskan Malamute
- 18.5% Siberian Husky
- 17.4% Unresolved
- 10.3% Gray Wolf
That’s right—our gentle giant has actual wolf DNA! Suddenly his thick coat, his size, and those striking features make so much more sense. He’s a magnificent mix of working breeds, which explains his intelligence and loyalty.
Forever Home
Whether he’s lounging on his favorite bed or greeting us with that tail-wagging enthusiasm that says “you’re home!”, Peaches reminds us daily why rescue dogs are so special. He didn’t just find his forever home - we found our perfect companion.
